Use pressure gauges on top of your pool filter or on a pool cleaner line. When filter pressure is 8-10 lbs over the clean, start up pressure, backwashing is indicated. Vacuum gauges, required on some commercial pools, are used before the pump, to measure the suction and can indicate a clog in the impeller, pump basket or plumbing line.
