AquaChek Iron measures Total Iron, which includes ferric (Fe³⁺) as well as ferrous (Fe²⁺) forms. Some companies sell test strips that measure only the ferrous form of iron, whereas ferric iron is actually more common in pool and spa water.

Iron may be present in the source water that feeds a pool or spa. In many regions, high levels of Total Iron can present a persistent problem. In addition, corrosion of iron pipes can cause staining of pool or spa walls and fixtures.

Copper is another common water contaminant. It is a metal that can cause staining and water discoloration similar to problems caused by iron. Levels of copper above 0.2 ppm (mg/L) can be very problematic. Excess copper can cause liner and/or interior stains.

High levels of copper can cause staining of pool and spa fixtures. Algaecides, copper ionizers and corrosion of copper pipes may elevate the level of copper in the water. Copper stains produce a blue green stain usually, but can also be shades of black in the presence of high chlorine levels. To avoid these problems, test the Total Copper level periodically
