Most pools require some type of heating, whether to bring the pool up to desired temperature during the swimming season, or to extend this season beyond the normal Memorial Day to Labor Day. It all grew out of the black hose "technology," whereby innovative farmers would run black hose or pipe out in the yard or on the roof to supply heated water for many uses, including bathing. "Old" solar involved copper exchangers encased in glass. Heavy, expensive and fragile. "New" solar is a variation on the old black hose. To increase efficiency and solar absorption, modern solar pool heaters  use dozens of small black hoses formed together in solid EPDM rubber mats. These solar mats are easily mounted on the roof (preferably a southern exposure), lay on the ground or mounted on plywood. On the top and bottom of the solar mat are headers, or collector tubes (pvc pipe), which distribute the water through the 3/8" tubes, and carry the solar heated water back to the pool. It's a very simple system which has greatly reduced the cost of utilizing solar heat for swimming pools.

Installation of your solar pool heater is as simple as cutting the return pipe and installing a three way valve. From the three-way valve, the filtered water can return to the pool as normal, or it can be directed up and into the solar collectors. After its pass through the solar collectors, the water is pumped back off the roof (or wherever installed) and back into the return line where it continues to the pool. SIZING YOUR POOL for the ENERSOL S-1000 SOLAR POOL HEATER

The Enersol solar pool heating system makes it easy to calculate square footage required for optimum pool warmth. Below are some guidelines for figuring the number of boxes you will need. The Enersol Solar Pool Heaters unique tubular design exposes more surface area directly to the sun at all times of the day. They are able to absorb heat re-radiating from the roof. The S-1000 collectors even capture hazy sunlight on overcast days. The number of boxes used should  also depend on available solar exposure (open sky, of course, is best), wind factors, average temperatures for the region and collectors orientation and angle. To state the generally obvious, the more collector surface area you have, the greater the heat transfer will be to your pool. Using a pool cover or solar blanket can dramatically reduce the number of solar pool panels needed for your pool.

Remember, this is designed to be a simple, homeowner friendly installation. Simply strap the mats to the roof, bolt down the headers, and run pvc pipe up the side of the house to the collectors, and back down to the pipe returning to the pool. Easy! No need to upsize the filter pump - No booster pump needed! Most Enersol solar pool heater systems are installed within 4 hours by two people.

As an alternative to roof mounting, many homeowners have instead built plywood platforms, and connected these solar panels at an angle to the fence posts or just propped them up off the ground on one side of the pool to face the sun.  Building a cabana or shade structure provides more locations for solar pool heating panel mounting.
