Most aboveground pool pumps will be able to be plugged into a 115V grounded outlet, or hard wired with 115V. Wiring them with 230V will overload the motor, causing smoke and sparks and irreversible damage.

Inground pool pumps are usually listed 115/230V - this means that the motor is reversible, or either voltage can be used, with a simple wire change in the rear of the pump motor. If a pump is listed as 230V (not 115/230V) this means that the pump motor is not reversible, and 115V will not be enough voltage to operate the pump. 230V is preferred by many for greater efficiency than 115V.
