Above-Ground Pool Filters
How to Choose an Aboveground Pool Filter
The biggest mistake people make with aboveground pool filters is not which type to buy, or which brand – it is buying a filter that is too small for your pool.
Filter flow rate charts can be misleading, and the filter that comes with a pool is often woefully undersized.
The best above-ground pool filter is one that matches your pool size, in gallons. The filter size chart above is based on real field experience, as a guide for filter selection. You can go smaller, but may have to run the pump longer, and use more chemicals to achieve the same results.
Aside from filter size, there are other factors that can help you decide on the best pool filter for an above ground pool. If you are concerned about water savings, Cartridge filters save the most water, and DE filters can also use less than sand filters. If you are concerned about water quality issues, a DE filter can trap the smallest particle size, followed by Cartridge filters, and then sand. If you want the simplest operation and maintenance, use a sand filter, but if you want the fewest repairs, install a cartridge filter. Now remember, the most important thing is size, so after you decide which type, Sand, DE or Cartridge - buy the largest filter of that type that you can afford. It is well worth the extra expense, to avoid water problems later.
